MPLS gives you a private routed network between branches. Traffic never traverses the public internet, which removes a whole class of security and performance problems, and lets us apply Quality of Service consistently across every site.
It is the right answer when you have applications that cannot tolerate jitter — voice, video, terminal services, core banking — and when compliance requires that inter-site traffic stays off the public internet.
Each site gets a defined class of service. Voice is prioritised, bulk data is not, and the policy is enforced on our network rather than hopefully on yours.

SD-WAN when cost and flexibility matter more and your applications tolerate the public internet. Many networks are best served by both: MPLS for critical classes, broadband for bulk.
